Before help arrives

What to do while you wait for a pest control visit

A few simple steps make the visit more useful and keep everyone safer in the meantime.

  1. Seal up food

Put food, including pet food and birdseed, in sealed glass, metal or hard plastic containers. Wipe up crumbs and spills, don't leave pet food out overnight, and keep trash lidded.

  2. Note where you see activity

Write down where and when you see droppings, gnaw marks, trails, live insects or dead ones, and take photos. It helps the provider find where pests are getting in and living.

  3. Hold off on store sprays

Don't spray store-bought products into the area that is going to be treated. Sprays can scatter insects into new hiding places and make baits less effective. If you've already used something, keep the label to show the provider.

  4. Keep kids and pets away from baits

Any bait, trap or poison, yours or a provider's, should be out of reach of children and pets. If a child may have swallowed a pesticide or bait, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. For a pet, call your vet.

  5. If it might be bed bugs, don't move things

Moving bedding, furniture or clothes to other rooms can spread bed bugs through the house. Leave things where they are until the provider has seen them.

Leave these alone

Don't handle droppings or disturb a nest yourself

Most of the waiting is harmless. Two situations aren't: cleaning up after rodents without protection, and going near a wasp, hornet or yellow jacket nest.

  • Mouse or rat droppings in cupboards, drawers, the attic or along walls
  • A dead mouse or rat in the house, the attic or a trap
  • A nest under eaves, a deck or a porch ceiling, in a shed or in a shrub
  • Wasps or yellow jackets flying in and out of a gap in siding or a hole in the ground
  • Buzzing or chewing sounds from inside a wall or ceiling

Why not to do it yourself

Rodent droppings, urine and nesting material can carry diseases, and sweeping or vacuuming them dry can put that dust into the air. Don't touch them, or a dead rodent, with bare hands. CDC guidance for small cleanups is to air the room out, wear gloves, and soak droppings with disinfectant or a bleach solution before wiping them up. A disturbed nest can send many stinging insects out at once, and nests inside walls or in the ground are hard to reach safely. Keep people and pets away from both and call.

Questions

Common questions

Who will I be talking to when I call?

Calls to this number are routed to an independent pest control provider that serves the Laurel area. Laurel Pest Control Help is not itself a pest control company. The provider you speak with does the work and gives you their own quote.

What about children and pets during treatment?

Ask the provider before any treatment which product they plan to use, where it will go, and how long children and pets should stay away. Product labels carry directions on this. Keep children and pets away from any bait or trap.

Can I just use store-bought sprays or foggers?

For a few ants on a counter, a store product used exactly as the label says may be enough. For an established problem, sprays usually miss where the pests actually live, and they can scatter ants or make baits less effective. Foggers, or bug bombs, don't reach the cracks where bed bugs and cockroaches hide.

Is it termites or flying ants?

Both swarm in spring. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist, and two pairs of wings the same length. Flying ants have bent antennae, a pinched waist, and front wings longer than the back ones. If you're not sure, save a few in a sealed bag and show the provider.
